The Journey So Far...
Lotus Maternity focuses on the wellbeing and practical needs of mothers. The company has grown from the idea of a young student midwife, this is her story.
Olivia was in her second year of training, on her community placement and a common trend was women discussing their apprehensions about breastfeeding in public.
This was also quite pertinent within her on life, with her close friends expressing similar feelings, with many stating that they would rather go into the toilet than feed openly in public. This practice, is not only unhygienic but also totally unnecessary for a completely natural act.
She wanted to do something to solve this, especially when there had been various media stories of women being asked to ‘cover up’ whilst feeding. Whilst we can appreciate that women should be able to feed completely freely whenever and wherever.
Olivia understood that some women feel more comfortable limiting exposure and there still remains a certain uneasiness surrounding public feeding. It was this that sparked her desire to create a garment for women to breastfeed in public confidently with style and with complete discretion if necessary.
“It has been a massive learning curve stepping from maternity to the UK fashion & textiles industry. I am still exploring all of the endless possibilities and still learning new things as I continue to develop our product range and grow the brand. I have had many ups and downs but plenty of laughs along the way!”
To sourcing more information on UK manufacturing at the first ‘Make it British’ conference, to discussing the idea with various textile experts, Olivia has developed the product to an exceptional standard, suitable for the British market. Her achievements to date are a small reflection of this, having been awarded Nottingham’s 30 under 30 for inspiring young people in business. Other prestigious industry awards include The Independent’s 2019 product review, that recommended Lotus’ bamboo baby blankets as their best buy.
All the hard work, time and effort involved has been thoroughly worth it. Olivia’s devotion to mothers and their wellbeing radiates in her passion for Lotus Maternity and through her work in the community supporting new mums and breastfeeding through our postpartum support groups- The Postnatal Plan.
“Whilst our experience and expertise in maternity is proven, there is still a lot to learn in terms of business, sourcing local textiles and UK manufacturing”.
